Nerikomi is a Japanese technique for layering different colored clays or even just one clay body like porcelain into layers made with different oxides or different percentages of oxides. This technique was introduced to me by my good friend Naoko Matsumoto while living in Boston. Notice how some of the bowls are lighter in color the others. The darker bowls got more of the soda then the lighter bowls during the firing.
I used three different clay bodies for this project weighing 25lbs each. Basically I layered the clays, pressed them down, cut in half, and layered again. So by repeating the process, I got many layers, just like puff pastry. Once the clay is ready, I cut slices, and used a mold for shaping. Took a while! and it was heavy! I kept thinking"there must be a better way"
Naoko said once all the layering is finished wrap very well and let sit for 3-4 months.
Porcelain, and two different stoneware clay bodies, soda fired.
